Ethan Lu, Director of Graduate Studies & Sustainability Area Coordinator at NYSID and Principal of Metropolitan United Studio, was one of the keynote speakers at the 2012 Annual Assembly & Convention for the Association of Interior Designers & Decorators of Puerto Rico, also known as CODDI (Colegio de Diseñadores-Decoradores de Interiores).

The topic of this year’s Assembly & Convention for CODDI was “Upcycling” and took place at La Concha Resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico from March 21st through March 23rd.  The convention included an awards ceremony, vendor and student exhibitions, cocktail receptions, lectures and panel discussions

Ethan’s lecture explored the concepts of “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” and their origins from the leaders of sustainability who pioneered regenerative design models such as Cradle to Cradle, Biomimicry and Natural Capitalism.  This lecture also discussed the current trend of Upcycling in the Sustainability Built Environment and the different ways that everyday materials and objects can be repurposed to breathe new life into architecture and interior design.

Ethan also participated on a panel discussion with Grazyna Pilatowicz, the Chair of Sustainable Interior Environments at FIT;  Carlos E. Betancourt, the Dean of the Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico School of Architecture; Brenda L. Martínez Quiñones, a LEED AP practitioner in Puerto Rico.  Celina Nogueras Cuevas, the President and Director of Muuaaa, served as the panel moderator.

We would like to thank Sofía Liceaga (President), Joel Racet and Wanda Torres (Vice Presidents) from the Colegio de Diseñadores-Decoradores de Interiores for extending this invitation to NYSID and to Dinorah Bonilla for doing all the coordination work with NYSID.
